70-Year-Old Woman Cleaned 52 Beaches To Make A Change For Her Grandchildren

Pat Smith is a 70-year-old woman who in 2018 cleaned 52 beaches in the United Kingdom with the goal to end plastic pollution in her locality.

Smith started a self-sustained environmental protection company called Last Straw Cornwall, which is committed to fighting pollution in the town of Cornwall.
“Pat Smith’s company soon attracted other entrepreneurs, visionaries and ecologist enthusiasts to form a group that is strengthened every day”, Televisa News reported.

Since Smith felt that plastic was doing considerable damage to the oceans, she felt responsible to do something about it, especially for her children and grandchildren.

“In 2018, Pat decided to set an example and begin to clean, each week, a beach in the United Kingdom. So she traveled, tirelessly, through all of the coasts of her country cleaning beaches”, the aforementioned media said.
She managed to clear hundreds of kilograms of plastic waste, a journey she shared on her blog. Fortunately, she didn’t have to do it alone since many volunteers joined her in this project.
But it was not entirely joy, since several times they had to clean the same beach more than once.
So far, Final Straw Cornwall has succeeded in joining 285 local, national and international businesses to eliminate the 85 tons of plastic straws that are thrown away each year in the United Kingdom.
