The recently pardoned Peruvian Ex-President, Alberto Fujimori, was taken from his home in Lima to a hospital for observation on Sunday.
Fujimori, 79, has an irregular heartbeat, which is an incurable illness, according to the current President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. After an examination from a cardiologist on Sunday 14, it was recommended that he received immediate hospital care.
The pardoned ex-President had already been recently hospitalized from late December through January 5 for heart issues, including high blood pressure and arrhythmia, according to Reuters.
“He is going to have some checks done because although he has progressed favorably these seven days, he is not totally stable. He has short periods of arrhythmia,” his lead doctor, Alejandro Aguinaga, told El Comercio.
Fujimori was given a 25-year prison sentence after being convicted in 2009 of killing 25 people, including an 8-year-old boy.
He was also found guilty of knowing about death squads financed with public money.
Last Christmas Eve, Kuczynski pardoned Fujimori, freeing him from the sentence less than halfway through it. Several protests have occurred since the pardon, since many Peruvians believe it should have not taken place because of the gravity of the crimes and alleged human rights violations for which he was never tried.
Fujimori’s health was a reason for President Kuczynski to grant the pardon. However, some believe it to be a political maneuver to avoid being ousted by Congress. This decision triggered several cabinet resignations and large street protests.
