The Peruvian government has begun to design new measures to protect the growing volume of migrants.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Néstor Popolizio reported on Monday in the Foreign Relations Committee of Congress on the situation of Venezuelan migrants in Peru.
During this encounter, it was said that there are about 300,000 Venezuelans in Peru at the moment, and approximately 3,000 enter the country daily.
“In addition, more than 45,000 of them already have the Temporary Permit of Permanence and 255,000 are with the migratory quality of tourists, including those who are on their way to other countries”, wrote El Comercio.
Néstor Popolizio also indicated that 70% of the Venezuelan migrant population is working, which is equivalent to 1.2% of the Economically Active Population.
The minister also informed that almost 15% of the Venezuelan migrant population has used public health services and 6% have accessed state education services. For example, the number of Venezuelan students enrolled has grown from 3,800 in 2016 to more than 12,000 this year, informed El Comercio.
As a result, the Peruvian government has begun to design new measures to protect the growing volume of migrants.
Last Friday, the Lima Group (Grupo de Lima) reaffirmed its commitment to continue providing assistance and protection to Venezuelan migrants. It was also agreed to insist on requesting the government of Nicolás Maduro to allow access to humanitarian aid.
