Water is one of the most valuable natural elements for humanity. However, the World Bank says that by 2050 more than a billion people will live in cities where the amount of water will be insufficient.
“According to the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the continent [America] has the largest amount of fresh water in the world, which is equivalent to almost a third of the world’s renewable water resources”, Panamericana explained.
Three Latin American countries appear in the top 10 in the list of nations with the largest amount of water in the world. Peru is ranked 8th, second only in the region by Brazil (first) and Colombia (third).
Despite this, Lima is one of the cities in Latin America where much of the drinking water is wasted, due to inefficient use and poor facilities.
“Only 2.5% of the world’s water is consumable. Also, as cities increase their population, they have greater difficulties in accessing that small percentage of water found in rivers, lagoons and snow-covered mountains”, the aforementioned media said.
