A total of 415 rural families living in poverty in the Arequipa region will have “Sumaq Wasi” bioclimatic homes, as part of the Multi-Sector Plan before Frosts 2019, called “Operación Abrigo”, announced the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation (MVCS).
“These bioclimatic houses are implemented in high Andean communities located more than 4,000 meters above sea level, in the provinces of Caylloma and La Unión. For their construction, the National Rural Housing Program of the MVCS will allocate an approximate investment of more than 12 million soles”, Andina News Agency informed.
Jorge Arévalo Sánchez, deputy minister of Housing said that they are committed to making 6,016 homes of this type in nine regions in the country. “Of these, 415 will be built in Arequipa and another 5,601 in the rest of the departments that are affected by frost”, he told the news agency.
So far, according to Arévalo, 667 rural homes have already benefited hundreds of vulnerable families that face very low temperatures.
“The Sumaq Wasi bioclimatic dwellings (“Beautiful house” in Quechua) are intended to protect the most vulnerable population from the impact of frost and cold weather, as well as to improve the quality of life of families who live in poverty and extreme poverty”, Andina said.
These houses are conditioned to maintain comfortable temperatures inside the homes and they also have an overhead window on the roof that captures solar energy during the day.
