Chile is currently the main cherry supplier in China and Peru wants to be part of this market.
Cherries are highly valued in the international market. One kilogram costs $6 US dollars, and the Peruvian market wants to be part of it.
“In the Seminar ‘New species and varieties for fruit growing in Peru’, Mauricio Zuñiga, the Commercial Technical Manager of Viveros Agromillora, spoke about the possibilities that the international projection of Peruvian cherries presented”, wrote Fresh Plaza.
The main early varieties in Chile are the Santina and Lapins, and the very late varieties, Regina and Kordia, have the best projections, the article read. Peru could benefit from the early varieties of the fruit so that the country would not have to compete against Chile’s offer of November and December.
“This year we achieved a historical average price. In some cases, producers achieved some 20 tons per hectare, which means each producer achieved 120.00 gross dollars per hectare,” Zuñiga said.
