Archeologists found the remains in great condition in a Sechin archeological site in the province of Casma, reports El Comercio.
The dog fossils will be sent to a laboratory to learn more about the breed, age and other characteristics. The team in Ancash found the fossils in a main temple edifice of the circuit of Sechin archeological sites, and determined the remains to be approximately 1,000 years old.
The head archeologist Monica Suarez Ubillus informed the newspaper that they could observe the yellow and brown fur of the dog, as well as the padding on its paw.
Suarez also hypothesized that the dog belonged to the Casma culture which re-occupied the area in the initial AD years. The Casma culture originally occupied the Sechin ruins between 3600 BCE – 200 BCE. The study of the fossils will allow us to learn more about the culture as well as the Peruvian canine breeds.
The investigative team had previously found a 4,000 year old stair in its excavations. With one month and a half left of excavation time on site, they hope to make other discoveries.
