The Peruvian Congress approved yesterday a modification of the article 52 of the Constitution so that the children of a Peruvian father or mother born abroad are considered Peruvian by birth, wrote La Opinión.
During the previous debate, the parliamentary Ursula Letona, of the Fujimorist Popular Force party (Fuerza Popular), assured that this reform will allow “for people of legal age, of a Peruvian father or mother born abroad, may decide to be Peruvians by birth”, according to information from this website.
This modification will allow for these people, and not their parents, to decide if they want to be Peruvians by birth.
Luz Salgado, also from Fuerza Popular, and author of the reform, considered that this vote was historic. “With it, Congress resolved to give the alternative to hundreds of Peruvians worldwide”, said La Opinión.
To her, this decision confirms the constitutional principles of equality and non-discrimination.
