The Transport and Communication Commission approved unanimously to insist on the rule that promotes and regulates the use of bicycles as sustainable transportation.
Recently, government rejected it because it could generate more expenses, and considered that this law would only benefit 4 million people.
“The purpose of this proposal is to establish a plan to promote and regulate the use of bicycles as a sustainable and efficient transport, also it would help with the preservation of the environment”, explained Wuilian Monterola, president of the commission.
The problem of urban transport, such as cars and buses will be confronted with construction of new ciclovias and parking lots for bicycles, thus promoting its use in the country, according to the text of the rule. About this topic, the article 7.2 says that the adequacy in existing constructions shall be done in a period of one year, after approving the rule. The document also establishes that it will be made progressively and considering the budget of each institution.
Additionally, the proposal seeks to benefit more citizens. For example, workers in the public sector who use bicycle, as means of transportation to get to their working place, for 45 days will have one extra resting day.
On the other hand, the private sector is called to promote the use of bicycles by being flexible about the start or finish time of the workday, giving free days and having showers inside the company to be used by workers.
Currently, June 3rd is considered as National Day of bicycle.
