Odebrecht Will No Longer Be Investigated For New Cases

The Public Prosecutor’s Office would no longer initiate further investigations into the construction company Odebrecht and its executives, due to their activities in Peru.

According to La República, this was established in point five of the memorandum of understanding that the representatives of Odebrecht in Peru – Lourdes Carreño and Ricardo Machado – and the lawyer of former Superintendent Jorge Barata signed with the senior prosecutor Rafael Vela Barba, new coordinator of the Special Team and the prosecutor’s offices of money laundering.

Vela Barba informed that with the signing of this memorandum of understanding, the collaboration of Odebrecht with the investigations in Peru of the Lava Jato case is unraveled and recovered.

“All unrestricted cooperation with the Odebrecht company has been restored. Mr. Jorge Simoes Barata is at the full disposal of the Peruvian justice (…) We are optimistic,” said prosecutor Vela to La República.

Negotiations with Barata had cooled since May of last year. The Odebrecht superintendent provided information on six cases of corruption: payment of bribes to former President Alejandro Toledo on Interoceánica Sur highway, unlocking in Ositran, Lima Metro-Line 1, Evitamiento Cusco avenue, contribution to the Ollanta Humala campaign and the campaign of the “No” of Susana Villarán.

Therefore, today Barata returns to the negotiating table, which is positive for the progress of the investigation and to solve the situation of the construction company Odebrecht, paralyzed by the trust created to ensure the payment of civil compensation.
