The Police of Peru destroyed 15 clandestine airstrips located in the center of the country and that were being used to load airplanes with cocaine for trafficking, informed the Ministry of Interior Affairs.
According to La Vanguardia, the National Police of Peru said that “the destroyed airstrips were used to make an airlift to Bolivia, where they landed in the Amazon department of Beni so that later the drug would be distributed by Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay”.
Some of these tracks were 800 meters long (about 874 yards), and were located in the valleys of Pichis Palcazu and Pachitea, in the provinces of Puerto Inca, that belong to the region of Huánuco and Oxapampa in Pasco.
Peru approved a law in 2016 that gives faculties to the armed forces to bring down small planes that are declared as hostile. This situation hasn’t, presumably, taken place yet, said La Vanguardia.
“According to official estimations, Peru produces annually around 400 tons of cocaine to be consumed mainly in the United States, Europe, and Brazil”, explained this media.
In 2013 Independent wrote that to that date about 1,648 foreigners were serving time in Peruvian jails for drug trafficking offenses, which was more than any other country in South America. These numbers were due to a rise in the Peruvian cocaine trade, which was driven by market forces, according to this website.
