The general commander of Firefighters of Peru, Andrés Ángeles, said that his institution is not prepared to face forest fires in the Peruvian Amazon because they do not have the specialized teams.
“We are not prepared to handle forest fires [in the Peruvian Amazon] because the equipment is very different from what we normally use in the fires here in the city. They are very special and expensive equipment,” he told Canal N, according to El Comercio.
To better this situation and be more prepared to fight fires in the Amazon, Ángeles announced an important agreement, recently launched, with the Peruvian Army.
Among the things the firefighters are learning are extinguishing forest fires and skydiving. Ángeles also announced the reception of three modern emergency mobile units donated by the government of Japan, with the aim of strengthening the operational capacity of his men.
