The Ministry of Health (Minsa) in coordination with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) is considering adding a Selective Consumption Tax (ISC) to products that contain trans fats.
According to information published by Gestión, trans fats can cause heart problems, which can lead to death. The World Health Organization, WHO, say, regarding this, that “the intake of trans fats is responsible for more than 500,000 deaths annually from coronary heart disease,” as you can read in the aforementioned website.
The president of the Peruvian Association of Consumers-Aspec, Crisólogo Cáceres, considered that trans fats are located in the largest amount of packaged products we consume. Some of these products are milk, chocolates, cookies, cakes, bread, and others that are part of most of the people’s daily diet.
