Today, President Martín Vizcarra will swear in a new cabinet in an attempt to restore confidence in the government, after Pedro Pablo Kuczynski’s resignation as Chief of State.

“Emphasizing the need for unity, lawmakers in Mr. Vizcarra’s right-wing cabinet are expected to hail from across the political spectrum, with centrist Cesar Villanueva to be appointed prime minister”, wrote Foreign Brief today.

Vizcarra’s primary opposition, the Fuerza Popular party, which possesses 73 of 130 seats, could also feature in the new cabinet, the website explained.

They also say that Vizcarra is facing obstacles, such as the fact that he is seen as an outsider among his own party, “with some members criticizing him as disloyal throughout Kuzcynski’s time as president”, according to them.

One of the goals of Vizcarra’s presidency, which will end in 2021, is to address corruption in the political scenario. Foreign Brief says that divides such as the one between Keiko and Kenji Fujimori and recent corruption and money laundering cases have generated distrust among the public in Peruvian politics.

Last week, Vizcarra declined to comment on the legal situation of former President Kuczynski, who was banned from leaving the country for 18 months by order of a judge in the context of the prosecutor’s investigation for alleged money laundering.
