The "Pishtaco" legend strikes back in Peru

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

This week many Peruvians, as well as the international community, were in shock over allegations that a criminal gang killed people - perhaps as many as 60 – to extract the fat from their bodies to sell it to companies that make cosmetics.

However, many people are expressing doubts on this horror story, especially Peruvian citizens over 40, who have seen the “pishtaco” Andean myth jump to the Peruvian press headlines every few years during all their lives.

In the mythology of Andean cultures, a “pishtaco” (or nakaq) is a devil that kills people to steal their body fat, which was allegedly very highly priced many years ago for cosmetics and medicinal uses.

Serapio Veramendi and some other accomplices were arrested this week after a routine police raid on buses travelling from the provinces to Lima found lemonade bottles filled with fat, that later laboratory tests proved to be human.

According to police reports, Veramendi explained that those were “sample material,” and that the band had collected 17 litres of fat, expecting to sell it to cosmetics firms for 15,000 dollars per litre.

While investigations continue, people like Peruvian Medical Association dean Julio Castro Gomez remain unconvinced of the story, noting that plastic surgery clinics obtain large amounts of fat in liposuction procedures and discard it because there is no market for it.

Also many Peruvians remember that stories like this one, or like the ones related to Virgin Mary images that allegedly do cry miraculous tears, as well as other urban legends, tend to appear on local press during in times when the Governments are facing difficulties.

Suimitomo Metals to acquire mining rights near the southern border of Peru.

Metal Suimitomo will purchase two mining rights in Peru's South, with the authorization of Peru's Armed Forces General Command, that was issued last July.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) authorized Company Sumitomo Metal Mining Peru to purchase two mining rights located within 50 miles of the southern border of Peru, in the region of Tacna.

Sumitomo's request is included in the course of public necessity provisions of the Constitution of Peru, as the interest in establishing the ownership of those areas transcends private interest, significantly impacting on the welfare of the community.

This exemption aims to achieve the development of border areas, thus increasing the standard of living in the surrounding areas.

Peru became signatory of The Hague Apostille

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

President Alan Garcia enacted today the law which makes Peru one of the signatories of The Hague Apostille, a legal instrument which eliminates the requirement of diplomatic or consular legalization for public documents presented by Peruvian citizens when traveling abroad.

Thus, the only formality required to certify the authenticity of a signature on a document will be the presence of The Hague Apostille, a special stamp on a document that certifies the authenticity of a signature.

The documents issued in a country that is a signatory of this international agreement, and that have been certified by The Hague Apostille must be recognized in any other country without other authentication, saving time and money to users.

Isabel Guerra

The 380-page dossier that summarizes the findings of the investigation on the espionage case that Peru sent to Chile is being revised by Chile's Foreign Ministry since last Thursday, when this process officially started with a meeting which was attended by the Chilean Ambassador to Peru, Fabio Vio.

It is expected that Chile will issue an official statement on November 23rd or 24th, according to the Chilean newspaper La Tercera.

"The Chilean government's decision, however, is to just revise the case, and not to start an investigation, as Peru has requested,” says the newspaper, pointing out at the fact that Peru “has not sent any of the encrypted texts that the police seized from the computer of the spy."

"Chile will review these documents very seriously,” said the spokeswoman for Chilean's Executive, Carolina Toha.
