Peru and Chile are not enemies, but natural allies to compete in the Asian markets, said the Peruvian-Chilean Business Council official Jose Francisco Raffo.

“Thanks to the APEC Forum, Peru and Chile see each other not as enemies or rival countries, but partners who aim to jointly compete with the giant Asian markets,” he said.

Raffo noted that Peru and Chile are currently the only two Latin American countries that have a FTA with China.

He also said there is a tremendous interest from Chilean entrepreneurs to invest in Peru, due to its stability and great business opportunities.

Raffo also denied rumours about alleged restrictions for Peruvian investors to enter the Chilean economy: “the road for Peruvian investors is totally open,” he added.

Peru's MSE exports likely to grow 2 percent next year

Andina

Exports of Peru's Micro and Small Enterprises (MSE) are likely to grow by two percent next year, reported Juan Carlos Mathews, executive director of USAID Peru Mype Competitiva project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Since October 2008, MSEs have recorded a 24 percent fall in shipments, a negative trend that will continue until the end of 2009 due to the international financial crisis.

Mathews stated remittances have declined 18 percent, affecting MSEs since these shipments are invested in improving the competitiveness of such enterprises.

The impact of global crisis in this sector would be dramatic if the government did not take initiatives to promote state purchases from MSEs, he stated.

There are companies that have closed down, and others are getting further prepared to deal with the crisis, improve their performances next year and recover in 2011.

Another road accident in Peru killed at least 27 people and injured another 50, according to Peru's Police reports: two buses crashed on a mountainous road near Lake Titicaca, in the Santa Lucia district.

The buses belonged to the Julsa and Destinos transport companies, which operate daily interstate buses in this remote southeastern part of Peru.

Some of the injured told the police and the press that they think the driver of the Destinos bus might have fell momentarily asleep.

This happens when the whole country is debating about the new Traffic Code (intended to reduce deadly accidents) and its high fines, which are rejected by the drivers.
