Five injured and damage to property were reported on on the first day of the 48-hour strike that peasant patrols and local organizations are observing in the province of Cutervo.

The strike, organized by the Front for Defense of the Interests and Heritage Cutervo, has been called for to demand the dismissal of Segundo Fernandez Tenorio, Sub-Regional Manager.

Early in the morning, the demonstrators were mobilizing peacefully thorugh the streets of the province.

However, violence erupted when police tried to disperse protesters who were conducting a sit-in at the front of the Sub-Region headquarters.

The police used tear gas to contain the crowd; however, the villagers responded with sticks and stones, breaking the gates of the building.

Things went worse when a group of supporters came out to defend Fernandez's management. Three policemen were injured, a protester and a journalist from a local radio station.

The General Manager of the Sociedad Nacional de Pesquería (National Fisheries Society -SNP), Richard Inurritegui, told the press that during the period 2004-2008 anchovy consumption increased 821%, encouraged by several promotional campaigns, which contributed to make more Peruvians take advantage of this resource and to incorporate it into their daily diet.

Another factor that has accelerated the consumption, according to him, is its bigger availability, since the amounts of fishing for direct human consumption have increased from 10,700 tonnes to 98,000 in the same period.

"We have are 10 different brands of canned anchovies competing in the market with about 50 preparations," he noted.

Isabel Guerra

The Peruvian Causa de Anchoveta (potato pie stuffed with anchovies) is one of the favorite dishes abroad: moreover, in luxurious Peruvian restaurants in New York a customer may pay up to US$30 for a dish, said the Peruvian Society of Gastronomy (Apega).

“Peruvian anchovy is very welcomed in Peruvian restaurants abroad and costumers have no doubts to pay good  money for a dish made with this fish," said Apega President, Gaston Acurio.

He highlighted the increase in canned anchovy exports in recent years. "We have to encourage young businessmen to increase the quality of canned Peruvian anchovy," added Acurio, who stressed that this will help to create "Peruvian Anchovy" as a premium product brand.

He pointed out United States, Spain, Italy and France as the main destinations and most demanding markets for anchovy exports.

This year's canned anchovy exports, up to November, are worth US$20.45 million which is a difference from the US$31.86 million in 2008.
