Puno: Eight School Children Die in Bus Accident

In the jungle within the district of Puno, eight school children were killed, and another 40 people were injured when an omnibus fell into an abyss 150 meters deep. According to Peru21, the vehicle belonged to the company Perlas del Sur, and was rented for a school field trip.

Assuming the unqualified driver did not die, what will happen to him? Probably not much! What about the owner of the bus that did not have SOAT? Probably not much either! My heart goes out to the families of the deceased and injured - no insurance to help pay for their loss!!

This did not need to happen.  This DID NOT need to happen.  But it did.  Why?  Because there are NO CONSEQUENCES to negligent actions by drivers like this one and the bus company, Perlas del Sur.  The 22 year old bus driver, if he is still alive, should be put in jail for 20 years for negligent homicide.  And the bus company should be fined more than they can pay.  They should forfeit all their assets and the money turned over to the families of the victims.  I am SO TIRED of the zero tolerance bull s**t coming from the Minister of Transportation.  This has to stop!!!!!!

I have to agree with the comments above.
If the mandatory insurance was not carried then a crime was committed.
If the driver did not posses a valid license for driving then a crime was committed.
I am curious. If Peru is a nation of laws then why do they not enforce them?
If people commit crimes then why do they not prosecute them?
Our prayers go out to the families of the children.
This is such a tragedy!

SA - in my experience in Peru, although there are many sensible laws, they are simply not enforced. Lots of talk, but little action. Sad, but reality.
