Canadian boxer Olivia Gerula says she will travel to Peru to fight WBA champion Kina Malpartida.
“I will fight any worthy opponent that is put in front of me,” says Gerula in a press statement. “It would be an honor to meet [Malpartida] in the ring to unify our titles and that includes doing so in Peru.”
Gerula, the WBC super featherweight champion, was clarifying news that suggested she was afraid to fight in Peru, Malpartida’s home country. On Jan. 12 a Winnipeg newspaper quoted her as saying “
we might not make it safely out of Peru.”
“There was never any disrespect meant to the Peruvian people,” Gerula says in her statement. “I would relish the opportunity to visit such a beautiful country.”
In email correspondence with LivingPeru.com, Gerula’s manager Butch Gottlieb said there are still no plans for a fight, but “team Gerula would love to start negotiations with Malpartida’s promoter and get this fight done.”
Kina Malpartida recently told Peruvian press that her next WBA title defense will “definitely be in Peru.” On Dec. 5 Malpartida defended her title for the second time,
beating British challenger Lindsey Scragg in 10 rounds by decision.
