(LIP-jl) -- According to the World Monument Fund (WMF), Machu Picchu - Peru's most important archaeological complex - is among one hundred of the world's most endangered archaeological/historical sites. Fifteen other sites from Latin America, including 5 other Peruvian sites, are also included on the site.
'Uncontrolled tourism', and 'development pressure', such as future plans designed by local authorities to expand access to the Inca sanctuary, threaten the preservation of one of the world's most fabled sites.
The WMO's World Monument Watch list indicated Peru is second only to the United States in the total number of endangered sites.
The Santa Catalina Monastery (Arequipa), San Pedro Apostol de Andahuaylillas Church (Andahuaylillas), Macusani-Corani Rock Art (Macusani and Corani), Laraos Terraces (Laraos), and Lima's historic city center are the other Peruvian sites found on the WMO's watch list.
According to the report, industrial development in the Macusani Valley is on the verge of erasing 'millenniums of history."
