Cyclists to ride through the streets of Lima, Peru nude

In a press release issued by Cicloaxion, cyclists across Peru have been invited to take part in this year's fourth annual nude bicycle-athon - Ciclonudista Lima, which is to take place on Saturday March 14.

The focus of the event is to encourage the use of bicycles as a cleaner means of transport, said Cicloaxion, an organization of cyclists attempting to change the mentality that cars are the best means of transportation.

Representatives added that the nude bicycle-athon would serve to increase respect given to cyclists by motorists and to encourage politicians to pass laws in favor of those that used bicycles.

Cicloaxion explained that the event was to protest laws that had erroneously been passed by politicians and were centered on vehicles instead of pedestrians and bicyclists.

When explaining why the bicycle-athon would be done nude, Cicloaxion stated that this was a way of showing how fragile the human body is when placed up against a machine such as a car.

The organization affirmed that many motorists forgot that this fragility existed. This can be seen in the number of cyclists that are killed by careless motorists, said Cicloaxion.

The 11-kilometer nude bicycle-athon is to begin on the first block of Bajada Balta Avenue in the Limean district of Miraflores at 10 a.m. Those that wish to have their bodies painted have been invited to do so at 8 a.m.

"Everyone is invited, children, teenagers, women and men, young as well as old," said Cicloaxion.

It looks like a nudist publicity stunt instead of a bike-a-thon.

"Laws that had erroneously been passed by politicians" that seems like it would sum up a great number of Peruvian laws.

I would be scared to death to ride a bike in Lima with a helmet and padding.  I can't imagine how dangerous it would be to ride nude.  I'd rather swim with sharks.

I think it is great that this worldwide environmental and body consciousness campaign has now reached Peru. It is a sign of political and cultural maturity that it is being allowed to go ahead. Someone needs to do sometjhing about the traffic in Lima, which is reaching crisis level, as in many of the world's big cities.
