Machu Picchu to celebrate 2nd year as world wonder

Andina

With a tribute to the earth or Pachamama and an Inca-related theater play, Cusco authorities and people will celebrate the second anniversary of Machu Picchu election as one of the New Seven World Wonders.

On July 7th, visiting authorities will receive decorations and will participate in ancient rituals such as the tribute to the Pachamama (earth in Quechua language) and a civic parade of all public and private organizations.

The main day's ceremony will also include a theater play performed by over 40 local artists.

In July 2007 Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the new seven wonders of the world in a contest organized by the New 7 Wonders Foundation.

The artistic and cultural activities will take place between July 1st and 7th. Admission is free.

May I once again point out that the "Wonders of the World" contest was a marketing ploy, and not any sort of "official" contest sanctioned by anyone but a private business?  Very few people voted in it.

The New 7 Wonders contest was ridiculous. Run by a private firm , and there were entire campaigns in countries like Peru and Brazil to get people to vote for their country's candidate, and multiple votes were allowed. In Brazil millions of people got text messages asking them to reply and vote for free. Very unscientific undertaking, and the new list is not recognized by UNESCO.

It was a big joke - and not recognized by anyone except the winners.

It has nothing to do with optimism or pessimism.  It makes no logical sense that a 120 foot statue in Rio built in the 1920s could be on the same level as the Great Wall of China or the Pyramids.

The polling was unscientific, mulitple votes were permitted, and the campaign was not equally promoted throughout the world.  In many countries nobody even knew there was a new list being considered.  Out of 100 million votes, 10 million were Brazilian.  So the statue made the list.  Just shows you how disproportionate and lopsided the process was.  Manchu Picchu made it because there was a huge campaign in Peru and Latin America to get it on the list.

When a vote gets a huge amount of publicity in one country, and practically none in another, it's only normal that the results will be askew.

I just conducted my own scientific poll, here are the results:

84%  David N should never post on LIP again
10%  David N should never post on LIP again
6%    David N should never post on LIP again

Granted this poll has no weight and is simply opinion, but clearly the people have made their choice.
