Top | 17 May, 2006 [ 11:44 ]Archaeologists, from the Augusto N. Wiese foundation led by Régulo Franco Jordán, have discovered the mummified remains of a female Moche ruler that dates back approximately 1,700 years. The discovery was made in the Huaca de Cao in the Northern Peruvian department of La Libertad. This is on my the most significant finds since the discovery of Sr. de Sipán.
The remains of this powerful woman were discovered in excellent condition. With the remains in near perfect condition observers were able to see a large number of tattoos of serpents and spiders that reinforced the mystical character of this person. For the discoverer of the site the fact that she had tattoos of these figures provides further evidence that she was a shaman of had some type of divine powers. In the ancient Andean cultures these animals were associated with the fertility of the land. The clothing of this Señora de Cao, as she is being called, was made of gold and silver. Various other adornments were found with her such as crowns, necklaces and earrings that demonstrated the power that this woman had.
The state of preservation of the body is so impressive that it is being compared to the mummy that was found on Ampato in Arequipa. For the archaeologists there are two factors for why the body was in such good conditions. One being the tomb was in the intermediate level of the Huaca de Cao. Being at a lower level the mummy was spared the damaging effects of the humidity and rain. The second being the use of a mineral called cinnabar, which functioned as a mild poison and repellent that kept bacteria away from the body.
Investigations are still being conducted as to the cause of her death, which occurred when she was between 20-25 years old. They are speculating that it might have something to do with the fact that she was pregnant during the time of her death.

Top | 15 May, 2006 [ 11:48 ]Last evening Alan García accepted Ollanta Humala’s proposal for a debate on Sunday, May 21. , “A Sunday seems to be a better day to me as it will allow more people to watch than a weekday”, said Humala.
Humala made the announcement on the show “Cuarto Poder” and shortly thereafter García accepted the proposed date for the debate. García did call into RPP (a radio station) to say that “It does not seem loyal or proper for Humala to say that I am impeding the process”.
With the date set only a few details remain to be ironed out. APRA, the party of Alan García, has proposed that the topics for the debate cover: job creation, education, health, security and Peru´s place in the world.

Based on prior polls it appears that the remarks made by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez have aided García to gain a couple of percentage points.
Those polled also indicated that they do not perceive that Humala has any key strength as a candidate while García was identified as a candidate who expresses himself and his opinions well. When asked about the candidates weakness those polled said that Humala is violent and aggressive while 32% found fault with García’s previous term as president.

Top | 28 April, 2006 [ 11:30 ]The three largest transport syndicates in Lima all expressed different opinions about the possibility of increased fares due to higher oil prices.
Omar Calderón, of Asetum, stated that there is “no other option” that we can use, and suggested an increase of 50% in the fares, which would bring many fares up to S/. 1.50. He added that with this increase the transport companies would be able to cover their operating costs.
Another representative, Jaime Delgado, president of the Peruvian Association of Users and Consumers (Aspec) called the proposal of Calderón “unjustifiable” and maybe “illegal” and that the bad service offered by the transport companies does not justify such an increase.
Leaders from other syndicates acknowledged that increase prices will not accomplish anything. José Luis Díaz, president of the Association of Urban Transport Companies of Peru, stated that they only way that they transport companies can reduce their costs is by forming consortiums and taking advantage of bulk purchasing.
