For the second time, the Ministry of the Environment of the Minam in Peru, denounced the American citizen Dennis Melka, founder of Cacao del Perú Norte, responsible for the deforestation of more than 13,000 hectares of forests in the Amazon.
“Convoca.pe website reported that this measure was taken after the Loreto Specialized Environmental Crimes Prosecutor’s Office declared as unfounded a first complaint against the businessman and other officials for attacking the Amazonian forests in May of last year”, Actualidad Ambiental informed.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the company took possession, in an irregular manner, without the required documentation, “of lands with forest aptitude as if they were rural properties with the purpose of deforesting the forest (…) actions that are very harmful to the ecosystem”, you can read in the aforementioned website.
Melka’s company, Cacao del Perú Norte, has also been accused of illegal land appropriation, and of threats and intimidation to farmers.
“Juan Luis Dammert, researcher at Oxfam, points out that those affected feel abandoned by the authorities, since they need advisers and lawyers to defend their properties, and instead find norms difficult to understand and excessive bureaucracy”, Actualidad Ambiental said.
