A historical sentence in Peru in favor of the Amazon and against deforestation

After a process that lasted 8 years, the Prosecutor’s Office in Environmental Matters in the Loreto region sanctioned a company for having illegally trafficked wood, which resulted in the deforestation of 2,000 hectares of natural forests in the Amazon.

The company that was sanctioned is Empresa Cacao del Perú Norte S. A. C., known today as Tamshi S.A.C and it will have to pay $5 million US dollars as fine.

“For civil society organizations, this sentence sets a precedent because it is the first time that a company that had systematically deforested the Amazon is sanctioned in an exemplary manner”, RFI wrote.

This company belongs to a group of about 30 companies called Melka Group that, according to the information, have dedicated themselves to deforest the Peruvian Amazon, about 15,000 hectares of natural forests.
