The Municipality of Lima strives to protect five green areas, which serve as some of the best day trips from Lima, by forming them into one system.
Looking to escape chaotic city life? Some of the best day trips from Lima are the lush lomas, located on the outskirts of the city. The pleasantly green hills are the focus of a new conservation plan set by the Municipality of Lima.
The Municipality of Lima aims to unite five of the natural areas into one protected regional zone. These areas include: Lomas de Carabayllo 1 and 2 (of the Carabayllo district), Lomas de Amancaes (Rímac, San Juan de Lurigancho and Independencia), Lomas de Villa María (Villa María del Triunfo) and Lomas de Ancón (Ancón).
Formed by the condensation of sea fog from the Pacific Ocean, these five hilly areas account for 13,500 hectares (nearly 33,500 acres) combined. To picture that, imagine Lima’s zoo, Parque de las Leyendas, 143 times over.
The Municipality’s proposal is in its final stage of evaluation and is backed by SERNARP (National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State). A representative of the Network of Lomas of Peru (la Red de Lomas del Perú), this movement towards conserving what are some of the best day trips in Lima has been eight years in the works.
“It will be the first regional conservation area administered by the Municipality of Lima, which is important for the local population because these spaces not only represent an area that we must conserve, but they are another option for tourism,” said Neptalí Sánchez, Manager of the Regional Government Program of Metropolitan Lima.
