Until March 3, Europe’s most important art fair, ARCOmadrid, became a platform for 23 Peruvian artists who were able to show their work in 15 different galleries selected by curator Sharon Lerner.
“Among the notable Peruvian names at this year’s fair are Carlos Runcie Tanaka, Fernando Bryce, and Teresa Burga among others”, Selections wrote.
In addition, Maya Watanabe, a young Peruvian artist won the second edition of the Han Nefkens Foundation / ARCO Madrid Prize. “At La Casa Encendida, Watanabe’s solo show presents her newest production—which will tour, later this year, to MALI, Lima Art Museum— a challenging video work about the Peruvian genocide in the 1980s”, the aforementioned website said.
Watanabe’s work is entitled Liminal and examined mass graves of Peruvian victims with her lens. “Playing with the focus of the camera, Watanabe’s lens takes close ups of the material traces—bones intermingled with earth matter—but framed in a way that doesn’t feel intrusive, but rather as part of an ongoing process of truth and reconciliation”, Selections explained.
