If you’ve traveled to Peru during the cold months, you’ve seen the street carts serving emoliente. Watch the video to learn how to make this national drink at home.
Though you can get it at cafés or restaurants, the best way to try this delicious drink is on a street corner in Peru. Emoliente is filled with rich properties that help your body fight off colds and of course keep you warm.
What is emoliente?
This national treasure is infused with herbs such as cola de caballo (horsetail), cebada tostada (roasted barley), sugar, lime juice, linaza (linseed), alfalfa, boldo, and of course, fruit such as pineapple and membrillo (quince fruit). Street vendors may also offer customers the additional maca, muña, sábila (aloe vera), chia, pollen, honey or algarrobina to combine to the traditional emoliente.
What is it good for?
If you’re suffering from a cold, gastritis, or just plain old digestive problems, then emoliente is the perfect cure. It is also an anti-inflammatory and diuretic.
