Some movie theaters perceive more than 40% of their income from the confectionery they sell.
Recently a resolution that allows the free entry of food into cinemas Cineplanet and Cinemark was approved. Its main goal is not to force the customers to consume only products sold in movie theaters, which are usually even more expensive than the entry ticket itself, wrote La República.
“In Peru, it is estimated that box office revenue generates around 431 million Soles, according to a study conducted by Apoyo y Asociados Internacionales – Fitch Ratings (AAI).”, explained this news site.
In relation to the measure, according to the study, this was directed against the two companies that generated the most revenue so far, which are Cineplanet with 53.4% and Cinemark with 19.0%. Then follows Cinestar with 12.3% and UVK with 4.4%, which could also be asked to take measures later on.
In relation to the income for the confectionery, Cineplanet came to perceive 40.7% of its income from that part, while Cinemark an average of 35% in what was the whole year 2017.
These numbers have made many customers question if this is something that only occurs in Peru, but La República says that the answer is no.
“In Mexico, a soft drink or the largest-sized popcorn is even up to 300% more expensive in movie theaters than in a winery, and as if that were not enough, branded products such as M&M chocolates cost more than 100% from its original price in the confectionery”, La República wrote.
