New Project to Regulate Medicine Prices

Share

A control in medicine prices will impede pharmacies to sell overpriced products.

In midst of the debate of Inkafarma’s domain in the pharmaceutical market, Congressman Javier Velásquez Quesquén announced that he will present a bill that regulates medicine prices.
He mentioned to La República that he has done research on medicine prices regulation and that his bill is based on Brazil’s case where there is a Medicine Market Regulation Chamber that regulates their prices.

“The goal is for the State to coordinate a maximum price for medicine with the most demand, in order that pharmacies can’t offer the product with prices above the established”, La República wrote.

On Peru’s case, it would be the General Direction for Medicine, Supplies, and Drugs (Digemid) the institute in charge of monitoring and controlling prices.
Velásquez believes that instead of letting the market regulate medicine prices, a control should be established. He also thinks that this could generate scarcity in some products if laboratories lose interest in manufacturing them because of the price control.
The Colegio Médico del Perú’s Ex-Dean, Miguel Palacios, told La República that the pharmacy monopoly situation is just a part of the complex scenery that the Peruvian consumer will have to live in. He also mentioned that the insurance business has also important issues to address price-wise.
