Inca Citadel Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites, continues to attract travelers from all corners of the globe. However, access to this historical treasure has become increasingly challenging due to limited ticket availability.
Why Limited Tickets?
Machu Picchu’s daily visitor limit is a preservation measure to protect the site’s delicate archaeological remains. In collaboration with UNESCO, the Peruvian government has set a maximum of visitors per day to minimize wear and tear on this ancient citadel.
The Smart Choice
Booking your trip at least two months in advance is highly recommended to maximize your chances of visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site. This allows you to secure your preferred date and entrance time, ensuring you get all the benefits due to limited availability.
- Peak Seasons: May to September is the peak season when the weather is typically drier. Securing tickets during these months can be more challenging, making advanced booking even more crucial. In this case, we recommend six months in advance.
- Non-Peak Seasons: October to April is a low season when the weather is usually rainy. Getting tickets used to be easy; with the new government policies, it is now challenging. In this case, we recommend two months in advance.
- Ideal Time to Visit: The morning session (6 AM to 12 PM) is the best time to explore Machu Picchu. Booking ahead increases your chances of getting a morning slot, which allows you to enjoy cooler weather and fewer crowds.
- Inca Trail: If you plan to hike the Inca Trail, note that permits are limited and can sell out months in advance. Booking through a licensed tour operator is the only way to secure these permits.
Last-Resort Option
If you cannot secure tickets in advance, there’s a last-resort option to consider. Some limited tickets are available for purchase in person the day before your visit on Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. Be prepared for long lines and uncertainty if you choose this route.
