NUNA: Peru’s Newest Category of Distillates

Distillery of Peru launched in the bicentennial year and have created NUNA, a new category of 100% Peruvian distillate.

A new distillery in town

Distillery of Peru is a new local venture founded by three young Peruvians, which was born with the vision of raising the Peruvian distillery in the world with NUNA, a double premium artisanal distillate of sugar cane and select botanicals, one of a kind, whose production technique and inputs used to place it as a new category in the world of distillates.

“Our distillery was born as a project at the beginning of 2018, with the passion to create something new and different, which carries our essence as a country. A product made with select inputs from our land and created with Peruvian hands,” says Jorge Cantuarias (CEO of Distillery of Peru).

This venture contributes to the development of farmers and artisan producers, since sugar cane brandy, the main input in the production of NUNA, is produced and supplied by associations of artisanal producers in the Cajamarca region, strategic allies of Distillery of Peru.

“NUNA is born from our mother earth, our Pachamama, hence its name, NUNA, a Quechua word that means spirit or soul, because for us this distillate represents the spirit of our earth, and that is what we want to transmit to everyone who tries our product,” Jorge shares.

Distillery of Peru launches NUNA with its brand NUNA ORIGEN, a brand with a Peruvian soul that has the mission of bringing this new premium distillate to all of Peru and the world.

The NUNA process

NUNA is part of the natural juice of sugar canes that grow at more than 2,500 meters above sea level in the Cajamarca region, in the sugar mills of the artisan producers of that region. This cane juice is naturally fermented and then distilled in artisanal stills to later reach its plant in Lima, where it undergoes a maceration process with select local botanicals, such as ginger and citrus peels.

After the maceration period, it is distilled for the second time in a copper alembic, resulting in a highly aromatic distillate with a high alcoholic degree, which is hydrated with water treated by reverse osmosis to bring it to 42 degrees of alcohol. This distillate is filtered and finally goes through a minimum period of three months before being released commercially.

“Through a process that we have perfected over the years and with exhaustive quality control, we have achieved the highest purity with NUNA, a new 100% Peruvian distillate, in whose aroma and flavor you will feel every corner of our beautiful land,” shares the CEO of Distillery of Peru.
