The Uruguayan government has denied the asylum requested by the former Peruvian president, Alan García, investigated in the Odebrecht case.
“We will not grant political asylum to former President Alan García,” announced the president of Uruguay, Tabaré Vazquez, at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa, informed RT Noticias.
Vazquez said that after the investigations, it has been concluded that Garcia’s case “is not of political persecution,” and the decision of the Uruguayan government is due to “strictly legal considerations.”
Tabaré Vásquez announced that García will need to leave the embassy immediately.
“It was taken into account that the Peruvian Justice is investigating presumable economic crimes against Mr. Alan García,” the president concluded.
