Three 26-year-old mountaineers from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a Peruvian mountain guide passed away in the Andes this Sunday because of an avalanche. One of them managed to survive.
“The bodies of the four mountaineers have been rescued this morning. Two of the three deceased young people are from Sant Cugat del Vallès and the third from Cerdanyola”, El Periódico informed today.
The corpses have been moved to the city of Huaraz and procedures will be carried out to send them back to their country of origin: Spain.
The surviving mountaineer is identified as Paolo Belmonte Calderón and was admitted to a clinic in Huaraz on Sunday. He is currently in good condition, the media reported.
“The group was trying to climb the snow-covered Mateo, in the Ancash region, in the center of Peru which is more than 5,000 meters high, when they were surprised by the avalanche. According to the local media Huaraz Informa, the identities of the deceased are Adrià San Juan Perello, Sergi Porteros Villar and Gerard Borrull Regal (…) and the Peruvian guide Rubén Darío Alba”, said El Periódico.
A police spokesman told Efe that the mountaineers suffered the fall of a snowfall 100 meters from the summit, and apparently, one slipped and dragged the others, who were tied to a rope. The bodies were dragged some 200 meters downhill.
