Yesterday, Telefónica announced the launch of an open-access mobile infrastructure in Peru to expand broadband connectivity to remote areas of the country.
According to El Comercio, this project is called Internet for All (Internet para Todos, IpT, in Spanish) and it was created in partnership with Facebook, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Andean Development Corporation (CAF).
“IpT Peru’s mission is to close that digital divide and connect rural communities across Peru by allowing any mobile network operator to use IpT’s 3G and 4G infrastructure to offer high-quality mobile retail communications services,” said the company in a statement.
Telefónica, the largest Internet provider in Peru, said that the success of IpT “will pave the way to replicate this type of business model in other countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region,” according to information published in El Comercio.
Telefónica will also offer wholesale access to its broadband infrastructure that will allow any mobile operator to provide services in rural areas and maintain low costs.
