A successful drug rehabilitation center in the Lima neighbourhood of Santa Beatriz will soon open its doors to women clients, thanks in part to support from Canada.
Father Gilles Rivard, a Canadian and co-founder of the Escuela de la Vida centre, says US$ 3,500 in funding from the Canada Fund for Local initiatives has helped convert an older private home, bequeathed to the rehabilitation centre, into a safe and welcoming place for drug addicts and their families. The renovated center was unveiled in a ceremony held on 19 April. Renovations include the construction of separate quarters for women, which will allow the center to begin receiving female residential clients.
Escuela de la Vida treats recovering drug addicts without administering any chemical aids. The centre has more than 15 years of experience treating male recovering drug addicts in residence. It also operates day and evening programs for addicts and their families. Male clients typically require more than a year of treatment, while female clients are expected to require no more than three months.
