The second phase of the National Center for Agricultural and Forest Biotechnology (CNBAS) will require an investment of approximately
US$30 million in the 2010-2012 period, reported project manager Wiliam Vivanco.
With this project, Peru seeks to increase protection and use of the country's biodiversity, which will also serve for trade negotiations, he said.
“The first phase, which is state-funded, aims to strengthen the
Peruvian National Institute for Agrarian Innovation (INIA) capacities in equipments, labs and human resources to meet the biosecurity objective in the agricultural sector,” said Vivanco.
He remarked that in a favorable context, the second phase should start by the second quarter of 2010, financed by an external loan.
“We will also have the strategical support of the Interamerican Institute of Agricultural Cooperation (IICA),” Vivanco noted.
