According to Tania Goossens, director of the UN World Food Program, cited by Gestión, 50% of the cause of anemia in Peru is due to the iron deficit, so it is important that entities such as the Ministry of Agriculture have an active role in guaranteeing availability and access to iron-rich food.
“The remaining 50% of the cause of the disease is due to the lack of access to water, sanitation and hygiene”, Gestión wrote. “There are pending tasks in infrastructure, access to clean water and hygiene, then again there are many actors that can contribute with the aim of improving all this,” Goossens said.
She also believes that the Government’s goal of reducing anemia from 43% to 19% by 2021 is very ambitious but it can be done.
“There is already a multisectoral plan in the country in the fight against the aforementioned disease”, Gestión explained.
