The online company, Amazon, tried many years ago to register the .amazon domain but Peru and Brazil protested against it.
These countries argued that the domain .amazon should belong only to the real jungle.
“The global body that oversees the addresses and protocols that make the Internet work decided seven years ago to allow network users to create new domain names in addition to those known as “.org” or “.com”, said El Comercio, and that is when Amazon tried to register .amazon.
However, they are still trying by taking their case to the Internet Corporation for the Assignment of Names and Numbers (ICANN) and, according to El Comercio, the corporation tried to appease its critics in Latin America by offering free Kindle devices and Amazon Web Services allegedly valued at $5 million US dollars.
“However, the effort was in vain”, the aforementioned media said. “When at a meeting in October the ICANN board seemed to be supporting Amazon Inc., the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), a group of eight Latin American governments, issued a strongly worded critique”, they continued.
