Peruvian exports of blueberries have experienced a resounding growth in the last five years. From January to October 2014 they totaled $16,729,407 US dollars and in the same period of 2018, they totaled $381,129,696 US dollars.
According to information gathered by the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, this corresponds to 23 times more income coming from blueberry exportation. They also confirm that 2018 will close with shipments of around $500 million US dollars.
“The former president of Sierra and Selva Exportadora, Alfonso Velásquez, believes that the boom in the blueberry production will have a permanent effect”, Gestión explained. “We hope that Peru will become in 2021 the main exporter of blueberries, surpassing Chile,” he told this website.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Peru is currently the second largest exporter of blueberries after Chile. From January to October 2018, the main export destinations of Peruvian blueberries were the United States, which account for more than half of the number of shipments. It is followed by The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, China, Spain and Canada.
To continue expanding the market, Velásquez believes that Peru must prepare to meet the demand of Asia, where the blueberry is a product of great demand.
