Seven Companies Export Pisco from Peru to Chile as Schnapps

According to the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat), cited by Gestión, seven different companies exported pisco as a schnapps beverage from Peru to Chile between May and November 2017.

“It is known that Chile only receives this product if it enters the country with that denomination”, reports Gestión, referring to the schnapps designation. They also explain that before pisco enters Chile, it is relabeled.
It was known that last year in May, around ten companies were exporting pisco to Chile under the denomination schnapps.

“It all started with a scandal generated by the conditions to participate in the Brussels Contest in Chile”, reports Gestión. “In this event, being under Chilean law, it was demanded that all Peruvian products that wanted to participate had to it under the denomination schnapps”, they continue.

Because of that, Indecopi (National Direction for Consumer Protection), stated that in order to protect the Pisco Origin Denomination, if any product wanted to participate in the contest under Chile’s terms, would lose the denomination definitely.

It was later known that around ten companies were still exporting pisco to Chile as schnapps and refused to call the product “pisco” just to be able to access the market.

Since Chile is one of the main markets for pisco, many companies decide to give in in situations like this in order to be able to export the product.
Starting tomorrow, Pisco Sour Day will begin in Peru. Many activities will be taking place in the country to celebrate this important national beverage.
