Tourism in Peru keeps on growing every year, and the country continues to position itself in the top of the rankings of the region. Just in 2017, according to information from El Peruano, the growth in this sector was of 7%.
“The recognition of Peru throughout the world for its culture and gastronomy, international awards, promotion campaigns, as well as greater connectivity have been important factors that have impacted the good performance of tourism”, the media said.
Not only has tourism grown because of international travelers, domestic tourism has increased as well. In 2017 there was a 4% growth and El Peruano believes it has to do with an increased access to travel information, purchasing power, access to credit, and promotional campaigns that have influenced the travelers.
“This important sector contributes to 4% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and generates more than one million direct and indirect jobs. While mining generates a job, tourism generates ten”, El Peruano informed.
In addition, since the creation of Mincetur, which converted tourism into a state policy, the government has set a goal of achieving 7 million tourists by the year 2021.
Last year, the Shanghai World Travel Fair (SWTF) awarded Peru as the best tourist destination in America, while TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice 2017 awarded Peru as one of the 25 best destinations and considered that it has one of the best hotels and restaurants of the world.
El Peruano considers that the growth of tourism in Peru and the importance of its development is a tool that can be used to fight against poverty, contribute to boost the local economy, protect the environment, and improve the quality of life of host communities.
