In the heart of Lima’s historic center lies a treasure that has captured the devotion of millions. The Señor de los Milagros, also known as the Lord of Miracles, is a sacred mural of Jesus Christ, a masterpiece created by an enslaved African from Angola in the 17th century. This masterpiece adorns the adobe wall behind the High Altar of the Sanctuary and Monastery of Las Nazarenas in the vibrant neighborhood of Pachacamilla.
This divine artwork portrays a crucified Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit and later additions of God the Father, the Virgin Mary, and Mary Magdalene at the base of the cross. Its significance transcends mere art, as it’s intertwined with remarkable tales of resilience and faith.
1655, a devastating earthquake struck Lima, reducing the city to rubble. Amidst the destruction, the adobe wall bearing the Señor de los Milagros mural stood unscathed.This miraculous event drew the attention and reverence of the predominantly African residents of Pachacamilla.
However, the colonial authorities initially sought to suppress the veneration of the mural due to its non-Catholic nature. When they ordered three men to paint over the image, they were baffled by its inexplicable resilience. Ultimately, the Church embraced the veneration and erected a humble chapel to honor the image.
Another earthquake in 1687 demolished the chapel, yet the miraculous mural remained untouched; it prompted the authorities to create an oil painting copy, allowing the image to be taken to the streets and giving birth to the grand tradition of the procession. In 1991, the Museo Pedro de Osma meticulously restored the oil painting.
1746, Lima was struck by its most catastrophic earthquake, obliterating the entire city. Once again, the copy of the Señor de los Milagros was paraded through the streets, miraculously calming the earth’s tremors and solidifying the devotion to the Lord of Miracles.
October in Peru is synonymous with purple, as it’s when the image of El Señor de los Milagros graces the streets. The first procession commences on the first Saturday of the month, beginning at the Monastery of Las Nazarenas at noon and culminating in the Sanctuary under the cover of night.
Regardless of race or social background, hundreds of thousands of faithful devotees flock to celebrate the Lord of Miracles every October. Draped in purple frocks and adorned with a white rope belt, this month is lovingly referred to as “the purple month” throughout Peru.
One heartwarming legend tells the story of Josefa Marmanillo, an 18th-century enslaved cook with paralysis. Hearing of the miraculous Señor de los Milagros of Pachacamilla, she entrusted her faith to this divine figure and miraculously recovered from her ailment. In gratitude, she began crafting sweet nougat, which became renowned as Turrón de Doña Pepa.
