There is an obesity epidemic in Latin America and Peru is not an exception. According to data gathered by BBC Mundo, it is currently one of the countries in the world, along the Dominican Republic, with the highest increase in body fat among men: more than 3.1 kg / m2.
However, it is not all negative for Peru. The country recorded the lowest increase in the percentage of obese people in the continent.
Obesity is a problem that occurs all over the world and it is related, in part, to low-quality food, processed products and a sedentary lifestyle.
“In addition, experts say, it is closely linked to the socioeconomic profile of each country. And, contrary to what was believed for a long time, the data shows that obesity advances faster in rural populations than in cities”, El Nacional published.
On average, the world has gained between five and six kilograms per person in the last 31 years according to a study by the Imperial College of London that analyzed the weight of more than 112 million people in 200 countries of the world between 1985 and 2016.
An obese person is defined as someone with a high proportion of body fat and a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30. Some of its consequences are cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and cardiovascular problems of all kinds.
