Unveiling Sastrería Martinez: Lima’s Hidden Speakeasy Gem

Share

Speakeasies were illicit establishments where alcohol was sold during the ’20s and ’30s prohibition era; they disappeared at the end of prohibition and resurged in New York’s Milk & Honey during the 2000s.

Inspired by Boardwalk Empire, Diego Macedo created the concept of Sastrería Martinez (Martinez Tailors); the name comes from the Martinez, a classic cocktail made of gin, red vermouth, maraschino liquor, and Bitters.

The entrance of this tailor shop locates on the underground level of an office building on La Mar  Ave in Miraflores. Once you come in with the secret word, the tailor will bring you to the fitting room, and behind a false wall, you will be swiped in time to a different era with good service, cocktails, and live music.

The ambiance has soft lights, 20’s era inspired decoration and uniforms, and exposed brick walls; live music as jazz or funk, is in the background. On the bar, eighteen cocktails change yearly.

What to order

This is the second iteration of the menu; celebrating Sastreria Martinez first anniversary, there’s a menu that has 18 new cocktails, 5 of the best-sold cocktails from the first menu, and as a new addition, four non-alcoholic options.

  • Mr. Martinez 1.0 The first iteration of the name that named the bar it has smoked notes lapsang tea, which is used with gin, palomino fino, vermouth, chinotto liquor, and orange bitters; this one comes on a flask hidden inside a book.
  • Mr. Martinez 2.0 to understand the evolution of the menu, the 2.0 has a Johnnie Walker Gold label infused with cheesecake, white vermouth with thyme, bergamot, quinine, and cacao mucilage; this time around comes on the coal iron.
  • Lino (Linen) Made with an infused Flor de Caña Rum, Lilet Blanc, Liquor 43, turbo, vanilla, lemon, and Andean mint tincture, it comes with a roll of fabric as a garnish.
  • Remus uses dark chocolate-infused pisco, a homemade hazelnut and toffee spirit, a custard apple roseoil, lemon verbena hydrolate, and mambo bitters; this one comes clear as water and is flavorful.

They will keep you hydrated with the house water, or if you want it to be bottled they proudly serve San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna; some snacks are on the menu to eat and share. Some are cold, like scallop ceviche style, tuna tacos or cheese, and cold cuts, and some others are hot, like garlic shrimp, Prosciutto pizzetta, or short rib bao.
